Getting Started Online - Advantages, Disadvantages and How to Begin

Student Success Factors in an Online Environment
Objectives

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply strategies for successful preparation of student for online learning.
  2. Outline effective strategies for student retention in online courses.

Overview

The experience a student has with their first online course often determines whether they will embrace online learning and enroll in subsequent courses. If a student is prepared for what to expect, chances are good they will succeed in the course. If a student is unfamiliar with the online learning environment and receives no preparation before a course begins, they may have difficulty completing the course.

Orienting students to the online environment at the onset of your online course can go a long way in ensuring students are successful. If a student can easily perform the technical steps necessary to connect to the course, is comfortable with the course interface, and understands how to electronically communicate with you and their student peers for discussion and help, their chance of sticking with the course throughout the semester and successfully completing it is high.
